Stand Your Ground = Sociopath Meme
Conservative & Pro-Business politicians really rely on spreading the idea that it’s virtuous to act like a sociopath. Stand Your Ground is one of the most obvious cases I can point to that represents this goal. If you are legally protected from murder just by claiming “I was threatened,” then a person’s proudly-held racial bias to consider colored people as inherently more violent and dangerous than white people can protect them from murder charges in a court of law.
These laws are crafted specifically to “resolve” an incentive that previously prevented such outbursts of violence. Before, if you failed act like a responsible gun owner — hell, a responsible adult — and only use the firearm as a last-resort, you could be held accountable for your lack of responsibility.
This law is designed to be abused by sociopaths. Responsible citizens would rarely need to make use of this law as a defense in court.
These laws remove any meaningful need for responsible use, for reliance on guns as a last-resort to resolve a conflict, because the testimony of the assailant is now deemed more legally relevant than evidence and testimony that undermines the assailant’s claims.
These laws send the message, “it’s not my responsibility to recognize the humanity of another person before I end their life, and I need not take any precautions that would prevent needless gun violence. I can reach right for the firearm and I will be protected from the consequences.”
Only a sociopath would literally think like this — that you are correct to shoot first if threatened in an ambiguous fashion, and that you are not responsible for reality-checking before you pull the trigger.
Only a sociopath trying to produce more sociopaths in society would write a law that creates an incentive to murder other citizens without a provable cause.
You can be a pro-gun citizen without supporting laws like this. Don’t buy into the sociopath meme. The dignity of Human Lives are too important, and if you disagree with this then it’s possible that you are training yourself to act like a sociopath. Or you might just be one.
Be careful with human lives.
